Winners
• Jaxson Dart (QB, Ole Miss)
Dart showed the full arsenal and honestly it may have worked out that Sanders and Ward didn’t throw because he was so dialed in it may have looked better than both QBs who are viewed as 1 and 2. Recent mock drafts suggest he could be selected by teams like the New York Giants or New York Jets, both in need of quarterback talent. I know there are multiple teams that have Dart in their top 2 QBs…
• Kyle McCord (QB, Syracuse)
McCord who was the 3rd best in the Drills behind Dart and Ewers. The only incompletion he had hit the WR in both hands. Showed off the arm talent and I think did enough to start those conversations in Round 2. You are gonna hear comps like Andy Dalton you will hear a Kirk cousins and someone is going to talk themselves into it. Hes gonna to start a season for one NFL team.
• Matthew Golden (WR, Texas)
Golden’s blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash highlighted his elite speed, making him a top contender among wide receivers. Teams like speed. The bill could add him but honestly with the combine he could sneak into the top 20 and with huge questions about WR 2 I wouldn’t be surprised if his combine performance generated some Emeka vs him debate amongst scouting departments
Typed up and worked through some draft thoughts as i was sick watching everyone work out against exactly zero defense. i love going through RAS score and unpacking everything but wanted to keep this post simple. here are my winners and losers from the combine. obviously there are more but this is the start.
• Quinn Ewers (QB, Texas)
Ewers demonstrated consistent accuracy and poise during drills. Probably the second best QB doing drills behind Dart and this is what me and Zach both thought could be the case. Heard the buzz around him being a first rounder but I think it’s just smoke and agent talk. He at least did enough to generate some more conversations.
• Quinshon Judkins (RB, Ohio State)
Judkins did better than I thought he would. He scored a 9.8 Relative athletic score and higher than Trey which surprised me. The Miami Dolphins, seeking to enhance their running game, have shown interest in him and Trey I’d prolly bet one of the OSU RBs end up there.
Losers
• Tez Johnson (WR, Oregon)
Johnson’s slower-than-expected 40-yard dash time raised concerns about his explosiveness. This performance may cause teams like the Chicago Bears to reconsider his draft position. You simply can’t run a 4.5 and weigh under 160. It doesn’t work
• Harold Fannin (TE, Bowling Green)
Fannin’s lackluster performance in agility drills highlighted limitations in his athleticism. Consequently, teams may view him as a late-round pick. The size wasn’t there. The RAS was under 7 and the 40 was slow.
• Jalen Milroe (QB, Alabama)
Milroe struggled with accuracy during passing drills, raising red flags among scouts. Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, initially interested, might now look elsewhere for quarterback prospects. I think there is no way he is a first rounder after that combine. The short stuff was all bad. His pro do is going to mean more than Darts, Quinns and Kyles…
• Will Howard (QB, Ohio State)
Howard’s inconsistent mechanics showed up. And while he wasn’t bad he has enough football under his belt that you don’t want to see him miss some of the easy throws against air. I wanted to see him throw the ball close to the level of Kyle and he just didn’t. Going in he needed to have a day to spark QB3 convos and to me he didnt. His pro day with HIS wrs could flip things around for him on that front
• Isaiah Bond (WR, Texas)
Bond’s 4.39-second 40-yard dash fell short of expectations for a speedster. Really Golden having a far better day than him hurts his combine day. May this be a lesson. Underpromise and over deliver
• Ollie Gordon (RB, Oklahoma State)
Gordon’s underwhelming performance in explosiveness drills raised concerns about his athletic ceiling. This could lead teams to consider other running back options in the draft. You needed to stand out in this deep class and you didn’t.
If you guys are interested in mock drafts I’ll throw one together. Way back in the day I wanted to be a draft guy and still track it a little too obsessively and need to do a better job of sharing my thoughts here so here is this.
