Even though I’m an LSU fan, Clemson’s history dates back further.

Death Valley History

Clemson's Memorial Stadium, commonly known as "Death Valley," has a rich history tied to its nickname. The name originated in 1948 when Presbyterian College coach Lonnie McMillian referred to the stadium as "Death Valley" after his team's struggles there. The nickname gained traction and was further solidified when Clemson head coach Frank Howard received a rock from the real Death Valley in California, which is now known as Howard's Rock and is touched by Clemson players before each home game. The stadium, built in 1942, has been a dominant force in college football, with the Tigers winning 324 home games since its construction and maintaining the longest active home winning streak in college football.

In the 50’s, Tiger Stadium was often called “deaf” valley. When LSU beat Clemson for the 1958 National Championship, they claimed the name “Death Valley” in a troll-type move, and called the stadium that ever since.

Rubbing Howard’s Rock and running down the hill are both awesome college football traditions. However, Zach will tell you that LSU’s Tiger Stadium is where opponents’ dreams go to die.

New Sports Parent

My son had his first soccer match today (he’s 4), and I need to level up my “sports parent” life. What are the MUST HAVES for Saturday morning games? I’m open to all suggestions - best set-ups, snacks for after the game, coolers/bottles.
Ahhh yes! Alex, I feel like I am qualified for several topics on this platform… but this might be my top area of expertise.

Start with a Rocker chair. Elite, but don’t buy cheap. They will break and the nicer ones are well worth it.

At some point you are going to want a tent. Go with white (it’s cooler) and definitely get the weights to hold it down. You will still be buying one every few years because they break easily… but still worth it for shade and rain cover.

Yeti cooler. Gotta have it. We have a backpack, shoulder carry and a massive one for full days.

Some form of Tumbler set up. Could be for a refreshment, or a Saturday day drinking adult beverage. If you are a beer guy you can buy soda covers on Amazon and conceal your degeneracy all day!

Post game snacks: Oatmeal Creampies, Fruit by the Foot, Rice Krispie Treats… and then whatever pouch drink (Kool-Aid, etc) you fancy.

Some people get weather pods. Those people are pussies. Don’t be a weather pod parent. A nice tent and you’re going to battle the elements like your kid.

I’d also bring cold towels in your cooler for your kid and maybe even you… And if it’s hot enough there are bucket cooling fans that work wonders.

I might be back with more as you lobbed me a BP ball in my sweet spot.

Do you have a solid foldable chair yet? They have really leveled those up over the years... They have them with leg rests, pockets/cup holders, some them even have built in shade. You might need some place to sit if you're out at the fields for hours.

Coolers can be helpful. I was recently made aware of the fact that they have "snackle" boxes... They are tackle boxes, but for snacks. Seems like those are a hit for the parents with toddlers. Chips, pretzels, cashews, cheese sticks, apple sauce pouches, peanut butter crackers, Gatorade, Pedialyte are all good choices.

Your wife will find a cowbell at some point during this whole thing... You're going to want to misplace that...

A hat and sunscreen can be helpful. May want to bring extra clothes and shoes for your child, the minute you don't, there will be a torrential downpour...

Not sure how many Saturdays you're locked in for, but earbuds can be useful so you can catch your college football morning show of choice and not miss a beat of your child's game.

Hope this helps.
