James Yoder discussed this in a segment of a video he posted about a week or two ago, basing his opinion on Bryce Underwood starting over 50 games (as a starter all four years) in high school and receiving the majority of reps with the first team during the spring.
By stating this opinion and not trying to temper expectations, Yoder is stating that Underwood will be Michigan's starter week one and thrive. Yoder should make no excuses; if Underwood makes any mistakes, he cannot attribute them to being a freshman. Furthermore, when Michigan faces Oklahoma in week two, it cannot be Underwood's fault if Michigan loses. Additionally, if Underwood is as prepared as Yoder claims, he should be able to elevate the play of his teammates and compensate for any weaknesses in the offense while leading Michigan to the Big Ten Championship game and securing a berth in the College Football Playoff; anything less would be considered a failure.
I thought we, as OSU fans, had high expectations for Jeremiah Smith, but it seems the expectations for Underwood substantially exceed those. It will be interesting to see how this season unfolds.
